In Mozambique, the political party called the Remano Opposition Movement has declared that they are no longer conforming to the 1992 Peace Pact. This Peace pact was set between the Remano and their opposing political party, the Frelimo party. The Frelimo party is currently governing and has won every political election against the Remano since the 1992 Peace Pact. This peace pact ended a seventeen year civil war in Mozambique and allowed the Remano to enter as a political party. According to the article, the Remano accuse the Frelimo party of making the voting process fraudulent and “monopolizing political and economic power through a one-sided electoral system and harassment of its opponents.” The Remamo are also doing this because the Frelimo government forces seized a jungle base in which the leader, Afonso Dhlakama was staying.
This article makes me feel worried about Mozambique, which is a country that is already going through many problems with famine and poverty. Now, on top of all of those problems, one of the major political parties of Mozambique is dropping its peace pact with its rival political group. These two groups caused a civil war that raged on for seventeen years. A Remano spokesperson declared that the peace between the groups was over. The last thing Mozambique needs now is more violence, especially from Remano guerrilla groups who terrorize citizens. This is why I feel worried for Mozambique and the population within.
This article ties in greatly with the politics of Mozambique. It has to do with the two main political parties of Mozambique: the Frelimo party and the Remano Opposition Movement. These two parties are at odds with each other and they both want control of the government, although the Frelimo party has had control for a long time now, which is precisely the problem. These political issues can easily turn into violence as it did during Mozambique’s civil war. No immediate reaction was given by the government under President Armando Guebeza. The government so far is ignoring the problem because of the potential political conflicts. This goes to show all of the social and political problems of Mozambique.
